North Central WV Airport

North Central West Virginia Airport

In the early 1930s, farsighted citizens of Harrison, Marion and Taylor Counties fashioned the idea that air travel was the transportation of the future an in order to keep pace with the world, the area needed an airport. This idea came on the heels of the "Great Depression" and money was very hard to come by. Therefore, the tri-county courts sponsored an airport development plan and financed the startup construction of the North Central West Virginia Airport (formerly Benedum Airport), now home to the Mid-Atlantic Aerospace Complex.

After considerable planning and promotion, land for the airport was leased in 1935 and developers started a "primitive" airfield. Because it was a tri-county effort, the new airfield was called Tri-County Airport.

The runway was a short, grass strip on leased land. In 1937, the Marion and Taylor County Courts decided to withdraw from the project, leaving Harrison County to go it alone. In 1938, the Harrison County Court purchased more land and began a gradual development program for the airport as it generally looks today. This growth continues. The end of 1999 expanded the runway length to 7,000 feet and new land became available for economic growth. Over the next several years the complex will embrace over 150 additional new acres of land for development and location and this acreage will be serviced by taxiways and all other utilities.

Today, the North Central West Virginia Airport is part of the Mid-Atlantic Aerospace Complex, Inc. and is operated by an Airport authority established by an act of the West Virginia Legislature in 1960. The Authority is comprised of both Marion County and Harrison County and it consists of 10 members.

Airport Facilities

North Central West Virginia Airport (formerly Benedum Airport), as it is known today, has most of the sophisticated equipment necessary for safe air travel. The equipment was either paid for by the Federal Aviation Administration or on a share basis with the Airport authority. Benedum Airport service currently consists of flights through Washington, D.C.

North Central West Virginia Airport is served by radius approach radar control (ASR) and has Instrument Landing System (ILS) approach. It also has VHF Omni Range (VOR) and the Visual Approach Slope Indicator (VASI) system. The Airport's Certified Fire Rescue (CFR) rating is for 121 operations. It supports both general aviation and commuter airline activity. Peak demand occurs in visual or VFR weather and the airport has full capability to operate within the instrument or IFR system. ATC services are provided by an airport control tower with Area Surveillance Radar (ASR) and the Air Route Traffic Control Centers (ARTCC) at Cleveland, Indianapolis and Washington. Filing of flight plans is currently done through the Flight Service Station (FSS).

VFR airspace around North Central West Virginia Airport is relatively unrestricted. The closest airports are Wade F. Malay Field, a privately owned, public use facility, and Fairmont Municipal 10 miles to the north. VFR operations at these and other general aviation airports within a 30-mile radius of North Central West Virginia Airport have no operational impact on the airport.

IFR traffic to and from North Central West Virginia Airport operates in a radar environment. Clarksburg Approach Control is responsible for all IFR traffic within a radius of approximately 30 NM of the airport. The actual area of responsibility is irregularly shaped and based upon the approach control's letter of agreement with the three ARTCC's named above. Clarksburg is responsible for all IFR traffic below 8,000 feet mean sea level throughout its total assignment area with this altitude to 10,000 feet in areas south of the airport.

Since Clarksburg Approach Control controls IFR traffic to and from the airports within 30 miles NM radius of North Central West Virginia Airport, IFR aircraft arriving or departing the area have the benefit of radar vectoring service and are controlled by standard separation criteria. Geographically, North Central West Virginia Airport is located two miles from Interstate 79 and one-half mile from US Route 50. By air, it is a 30-minute flight to Pittsburgh and a 45-minute flight to Washington, D.C.

Projects

The engineering community has called it one of the greatest earth-moving projects in recent memory. At the northern edge of North Central West Virginia Airport (formerly Benedum Airport), crews have cut away the mountainside to make way for an expanded runway: an effort that extended the strip from 5,200 to 7,000 feet. The ambitious $32 million project had 400 construction workers who moved 10.7 million cubic yards, or about 265,000 truck loads, of stone and soil.

It did not go to waste. In fact, it was recycled on site. The dirt filled lowlands to the east, creating taxiway access to developable sites. North Central West Virginia Airport now has a runway to safely accommodate larger aircraft and 250 new acres of prime industrial park land.

Assisting in this work was the state's Army National Guard Engineer Battalion, which organized a North Central West Virginia Airport Task Force to help construct a bypass road to gain access to the newly developed land.
