The Robert C. Byrd National Aerospace Education Center at Fairmont State University
is working to meet the training needs of this growing industry from its state-of-the-art
school at the Aerospace Complex. The Center offers Associate degrees in Aviation
Maintenance Technology, and Airframe and Aerospace Electronics Maintenance Technology.
Bachelor degrees are offered in Aviation Technology with options in Aviation Maintenance
Management, Aviation Administration-Management, and Aviation Administration-Professional Flight.
This 60,000 square foot educational facility includes classrooms, a computer lab, learning
resource center, two 10,000 square foot aircraft maintenance hangars and a variety of
labs supporting academic and technical instruction and industrial training. The school is
presently working with each member of the Aerospace Complex and the Governor's Office of
West Virginia to accelerate and diversify its curricula to keep pace with the growing labor
needs of the area and the state.
The center has developed specialized courses in areas such as avionics and aircraft
electronics, advanced composite manufacturing and repair, aircraft sheet metal, blueprint
interpretation and aviation safety. It offers a one-year Avionics Line Maintenance Certificate
designed to provide current airframe and power plant technicians with FCC-certified
troubleshooting skills. It also provides high quality regional aerospace industry training
and community outreach services.
